1966 年 11 月17 日, Jeff Buckley 生於美國加州,他的父親正是著名歌手 Tim Buckley.
高中時代即開始參與音樂演出,他還搬到洛杉磯學習音樂,與一些爵士和 funk 樂團一同表演,如 Shinehead,這是當時十分出色的雷鬼樂團.幾年後他搬到紐約,並找來實驗吉他手 Gary Lucas 一同組了樂團 Gods & Monsters.
這個樂團立刻走紅,不過卻沒有持續下去.隨後 Buckley 一個人出沒在 clubs 和咖啡店之間獨自演出,這段期間的表演經驗,奠定他日後在音樂上傑出的基礎.
1993 年 11 月,他被哥倫比亞唱片公司相中,贏得一張唱片合約,便發行首張作品 Live at Sin-e EP,獲得好評, 1994 年又發行首張專輯 Grace (恩典) ,這張專輯被許多雜誌列入 1994 年最佳專輯,並贏得滾石雜誌五顆星的滿分評鑑.
聽到 Grace 這張專輯裡的歌聲,你會漾生的反應絕對不僅止於感動兩個字而已,他一手包辦了詞曲創作,部分編曲,吉他,鍵盤樂器,揚琴與塔布拉鼓的演奏,加上 Jeff Buckley 高亢如入雲霄的忘我吟詠,整張專輯如同一本探索人性的詩集.
重唱 Leonard Cohen 名曲 Hallelujah,隨著此專輯的成功, 1995 年春天,專輯裡的單曲 Last Goodbye 也成為一支金曲. all music 形容他的歌聲餘音繞樑,連綿不絕,就像是 Van Morrison 遇到 Led Zeppelin 所產生出來的音樂,那麼地美好.
1997 年 5 月 29 日晚上, Jeff Buckley 和朋友一起出遊,他一時興起,穿著衣服就跳入密西西比河游泳,幾分鐘後便消失在波浪裡, 一星期後,打撈單位在孟菲斯城河發現他的屍體,享年 31 歲.
這位早慧又早逝的天才,在他短短的生命裡,為樂壇締造出一個丟卻商業污染的奇蹟,詩般的歌詞,神秘的實驗曲式,加上他掏心的唱腔,源自於心底深處的迴響,塑成獨一無二的真心悸動.
